Live Lounge with Ongar Music Club - Joseph Spooner-Cello, Nicholas Bosworth-Piano

Ongar Music Club’s second June concert features Cellist Joseph Spooner and Pianist Nicholas Bosworth

The evening will include works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Manuel de Falla and Rachmaninov.

Joseph Spooner’s diverse career has taken him across the UK, from the Baltic to the Atlantic, and from the recording studio to concert platforms in Continental Europe, Russia, New York, Mexico, and New Zealand. Recent years have seen the release of recordings on various labels, including Rawsthorne’s Sonata, Hesketh’s IMMH, Sea-Croon (a disc of previously unexplored 1920s English music), and Sherwood’s Double Concerto (with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Rupert Marshall-Luck). 2020 sees the release on Naxos of Francis Pott’s At First Light for choir and solo cello. Joseph was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2012 and is proud to be the dedicatee of works by Alwynne Pritchard, Errollyn Wallen, and Martin Read. His instrument was made by Nicholas Vuillaume in c.1865.

Nicholas Bosworth is no stranger to Ongar Music Club, first appearing as Pianist for the Winner of the Essex Young Musician of the Year Competition in 1986, Soprano Jane Webster. A much sought-after accompanist and repetiteur, his concert and recital work has included performances at various festivals (Wexford, Edinburgh Fringe, Buxton, London Opera) and in diverse locations (the Royal Lodge at Windsor, the Presidential Palace in Malta, and the QE2) and with celebrity singers Lesley Garrett and Bryn Terfel. He has been official accompanist in masterclasses for Thomas Hampson, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Brigitte Fassbaender, the latter as part of the Wigmore Hall’s ‘Master Series’ recorded for BBC Radio 3.Work with opera companies has included Glyndebourne, Garsington Opera, Opera North, Iford Arts, ETO and ENO and he has worked on many recordings for Opera Rara. In 2019, he worked for ETO’s spring tour, The Grange Festival and played continuo in the Barefoot Band for Longborough Opera Young Artists Proramme’s acclaimed production of La Calisto. This year he is working for the Longborough Festival again and for the Glyndebourne Academy. Last year with Joseph Spooner he recorded online concerts for the English Music Festival and for Morley College’s lunchtime concert series and in 2022 they will be giving recitals at the Cayman Festival in the Cayman Islands.

Nicholas studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at the National Opera Studio. He has been made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his work.

Join Joseph and Nicholas for an evening of fabulous music.

It was with great regret that due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the guidance available from HM Government, the Committee of Ongar Music Club had to cancel last year’s Essex Young Musician of the Year Competition. However, we are delighted to announce the next Competition will be held in 2021. (The age limit will be raised to twenty-six for this one occasion, so that no entrants will miss the opportunity of entering the competition due to last year's cancellation).
