Jonathan has had an outstanding career as an opera singer. He has spent over 34 years on the international operatic stage singing leading roles in over 20 international houses – including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the English National Opera and Glyndebourne Festival as well as Lyons, Aix en Provence, Copenhagen & Stockholm. Being a natural comedian, it is no surprise that he specializes in comic roles. A clear demonstration of his quality was seen when he performed his highly acclaimed leading roles of Falstaff in ‘Falstaff’ , as the wicked stepfather Don Magnifico in‘La Cenerentola’ (Cinderella) and Don Pasquale in ‘Don Pasquale’ – in successive years on the prestigious Glyndebourne Tour. He delighted audiences as Don Magnifico – the wicked stepfather - in ‘La Cenerentola’ (Cinderella) for Opera Holland Park. As the review said ...’ the kind of role he does better than anyone else in the UK.’ The Stage
However, Jonathan is so much more than just a wonderful bass-baritone with a voice like melted chocolate. His ability as a musical chameleon - singing songs of great diversity to an incredibly high standard – engages everyone. Not just a great singer, Jonathan is an excellent all-round musician and he accompanies himself with ease and skill on both piano and guitar.
In addition to his operatic roles, Jonathan regularly broadcasts on BBC radio and television. He has recorded numerous CDs and television programs in many genres -including light entertainment and religious broadcasting, particularly with Songs of Praise. Tracks from his CDs are often featured on radio programs across the globe.
He was recently awarded a BBC Radio ‘Make a Difference’ Award in Music and Arts for his weekly, two-hour, streamed concert called ‘JV Live from the Steinway Room’. Throughout Lockdown he has performed music of all genres, interviewed guests and chatted to his unseen audience. Like the audiences that attend his remarkable & varied live One Man Show- An Audience with Jonathan Veira – they say it is not just a concert, it feels more like time spent with a good friend. We hope to welcome Jonathan to Budworth Hall in the future.

UPDATED STATEMENT REGARDING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK
It was with great regret that due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the guidance available from HM Government, the Committee of Ongar Music Club had to cancel last year’s Essex Young Musician of the Year Competition. However, we are delighted to announce the next Competition will be held in 2021. (The age limit will be raised to twenty-six for this one occasion, so that no entrants will miss the opportunity of entering the competition due to last year's cancellation).
