Ongar, Essex

Ongar ("grass land") is a parish and small town 11 miles west of Chelmsford and 21 miles north-east of London. Its importance as a settlement dates back at least to the 11th century. St Martin's Church, the town's oldest building, dates from the 11th Century. Many buildings in the town are in classical style and date from 1841. The original police station was the first large building in the town to depart from this style. Contemporary with it is the original portion of the Ongar Primary School.

The (long-discontinued) railway service between Ongar and London was opened in 1865 and bus services have operated since the 1920's. The line is now run as the Epping and Ongar Railway — a heritage transport experience where you can experience the romance of travel in bygone times

The Budworth Hall was erected in 1886 as a combined assembly, reading and coffee-rooms and still serves the community today. It is built of red brick and is of a complex but vaguely 'Tudor' plan.
